Smolyan
In the heart of the mountain, scattered like grains of a pearl necklace, is located the town of Smolyan. This ancient, young, wise and cheerful town will enchant you with its unique mixture of old and contemporary architecture, irresistible scent of lime trees in early summer, the colourful magic of the autumn and the white silence of the winter.
If you enjoy the comfort and convenience of city life but at the same time you are a keen skier - Smolyan is the perfect place for a holiday. Pamporovo is the nearest ski resort, only 15 km away. According to archaeological evidences, the Smolyan has been formed sometime between the second and the first millennium BC. The name Smolyan has been given to the town by a Slavic tribe, which had come to this area in the VII century AD. Smolyan appears on the map in 1934, and in 1960 Smolyan merged with the two nearest villages Raikovo and Ustovo, which classed it as the longest town in Bulgaria – 21 km. Since 1999 Smolyan has become an administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Smolyan regoin.
